What Are Some Top Tips For Preventing Storm Damage To My North Nashville Business?

1/29/2024 (Permalink)

Preventing storm damage to your North Nashville business location is just good business! Every hour spent handling the aftermath of bad weather is an hour of lost revenue and productivity, and we know you don’t want that.

At SERVPRO, we’re commercial storm damage experts here to help you be ready for whatever comes and recover from any damage.

To ensure that you’re in a great position ahead of storms in Middle Tennessee, we’ve got some preventive measures you can take below.

What Are Some Helpful Preventive Measures For My North Nashville Enterprise?

Here are some helpful ways you can prevent storm damage to your North Nashville commercial business:

  • Stay abreast of your local weather forecast. Download a weather app, sign up for local weather alerts, and pay attention to the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). The National Weather Service also issues weather alerts based on three-tiered levels:
    • Winter Weather Warning: This warning tells you to take action; a winter storm will likely impact your area. You should take steps to be prepared for strong winds, heavy snow or ice, and freezing temperatures that will make outdoor exposure and travel dangerous.
    • Winter Weather Watch means you should be prepared. Conditions in your area favor a winter storm with a potential for severe winter weather. If a winter storm hits North Nashville, be prepared for freezing temperatures, heavy snow or ice, and strong winds that may make traveling and outdoor exposure unsafe.
    • Winter Weather Advisory lets you know to be aware. Winter weather conditions should be expected but may not be severe enough to meet more serious warning levels. You should exercise caution when traveling and avoid prolonged exposure to outdoor conditions.
  • Assess your business property to determine if any areas need your attention in the fall so you have time to address problems before winter. Consider everyday items like trees, doors and windows, roofs, and water pipes.
  • Gather or purchase all the supplies you’ll likely need and store them in an easily accessible place. The most valuable tools for winter weather are:
    • Snow shovel, roof rake, ice chipper
    • Snow brushes and window scrapers
    • Road salt and ice melt
    • Flashlights and batteries
    • Jumper cables
    • An electric generator
    • Blankets
    • Food and water
  • Consolidate your essential contact information into one document, including your snowplow company, local fire department, police department, insurance agent, heating contractor, plumber, and electrician. Keep the list with your emergency tools.

How Do I Prepare My North Nashville Home For Winter Storms?

12/18/2023 (Permalink)

Freezing temperatures, icy roads, communication service losses, and power failures are all expected during the winter months in North Nashville. Avoid damage to your home and any dangerous situations by always being prepared!

What Are Some Winter Preparation Tips For North Nashville Homeowners?

Here are some winter storm preparation tips you can use to keep your North Nashville home ready for whatever comes:

  • Install weather stripping to seal your windows and doors to regulate the interior temperature by keeping the cold air outside.
  • Check your chimney or flue if you plan to use a fireplace or a wood stove for heating. Find an inspector online or ask your local fire department for recommendations.
  • Keep blankets and other heat-generating materials in storage! If you have extra blankets, coats, an emergency phone charger, and coal (if you have a wood-burning stove), you’ll stay warm this winter, even if your power goes out.
  • Research the best generators; this is key because winter storms often bring many other issues, such as precipitation and wind, which can easily down power lines, causing your heat to go out. Having a generator onsite and ready to go during an emergency will allow you to save any foodstuffs that might spoil if the power goes out.
  • Invest in a sump pump in case of flooding. A battery-operated sump pump will kick on and pump for hours or days when the power is off, keeping water out of your basement.

How Do I Prepare For Nashville’s Fall Tornado Season?

10/30/2023 (Permalink)

How Do I Prepare For Nashville’s Fall Tornado Season?

It may come as a surprise to learn that Middle Tennessee has not one but TWO tornado seasons!

The meeting of air masses during a change of seasons creates volatile weather conditions that can result in tornadic activity; the cold air mass from Canada and the warm Gulf of Mexico moisture come together and clash across Tennessee.

How can you be prepared for severe weather during the fall? We’ve got some top tips to help you today. Keep reading to learn more.

What Are Some Important Preparations I Can Make Ahead Of Severe Weather This Fall?

Keep your family and North Nashville property safe during fall tornado season by preparing your location beforehand in the following ways:

  • Install retractable storm shutters, which can be opened and closed immediately to guard against flying debris, protect your household members, and minimize damage inside your home or business.
  • Keep trees in your yard trimmed, removing damaged or weak limbs; these could become projectiles during strong winds or tornadic activity. Be sure to clean up any heavy debris like firewood, branches, or bricks surrounding your home.
  • If intense storms are forecasted for your area, store away patio furniture, trash cans, grills, or potted plants to avoid damage. Even lightweight items can become dangerous projectiles when strong winds occur, so move or secure any loose objects beforehand to prevent this. The American Red Cross recommends creating a list of items you should bring inside to make your emergency prep simpler and quicker if you need to prepare.
  • The Red Cross also recommends hiring a professional to reinforce your attached garage door. Debris can break your door, allowing winds and water to enter and making your home vulnerable.

What Are The Warning Signs Of A Possible Tornado In North Nashville?

Knowing what the tornado warning signs are will help you prepare for tornado season. You may receive alerts that you are under a “tornado watch,” either by local news or other means; a tornado watch means that the present weather conditions favor violent weather.

Watch for these danger signs:

  • Dark, greenish sky
  • Large, dark, and low-lying clouds
  • Hail
  • A roaring sound is often described as sounding like a passing train.

If your weather professionals report a “tornado warning” in the area, a tornado has been spotted on the ground or indicated by radar. You will need to take cover immediately:

  • Go to the area of your home that is lowest and closest to the center interior immediately, putting as many walls between yourself and the outside elements as possible.
  • Stay away from windows and keep them closed.
  • Use your arms to protect your head, and cover yourself with pillows, a mattress, or a sleeping bag.
  • Remember where large, heavy objects are on the floor above you, and stay away from the area directly beneath if the ceiling gives way.

Having a tornado safety plan at your North Nashville home or office is essential in letting your workforce and family know where to shelter quickly.

Cleaning up after a damaging weather event like a tornado can be a significant project. When it comes to storm damage to your North Nashville home or business by a tornado, hurricane, or other severe weather, remember that the team here at SERVPRO of North Nashville is here to help you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

We also handle many other types of disasters, such as fire damage and water damage, and we are commercial restoration experts! Call us whenever disaster strikes at (615) 242-9391!

What Are Some Effective Storm Damage Prevention Tips For My North Nashville Location?

9/18/2023 (Permalink)

It may still be hot outside right now, but winter is on its way. As a savvy North Nashville home or business owner, you know it’s best to prepare for stormy weather beforehand. Debris, power outages, and standing water can create dangerous situations during winters here in Middle Tennessee. Now is the perfect time to put some preventative measures in place for your North Nashville location!

Let’s discuss ways to prevent and handle any damage you may experience.

What Important Preventative Measures Can I Take For Stormy Weather In North Nashville?

Here are some helpful tips to consider when planning your storm damage prevention:

  • Safety should be everyone’s top priority. Whether you’re considering the well-being of your loved ones or your workforce, consider these safety steps to help you ensure no one gets hurt by damages from a winter storm. If you or a loved one are over 65 years old, place an easy-to-read thermometer indoors where you will see it frequently. Our ability to feel a change in temperature decreases with age. Older adults are more susceptible to health problems caused by cold weather. Check the temperature of your home often during the winter months.
  • Weatherproof your home. Insulate any water lines that run along exterior walls so your water supply will be less likely to freeze. Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows and insulate walls and attic. Install storm or thermal-pane windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside. Repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on your home or other structure during a storm.
  • Have your chimney or flue inspected yearly if you plan to use a fireplace or wood stove for emergency heating. Ask your local fire department to recommend an inspector or find one online.
  • Install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector. If you use a fireplace, wood stove, or kerosene heater, install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector near the area to be heated. Test them monthly and replace batteries twice a year. Keep a multipurpose, dry-chemical fire extinguisher nearby. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside.
  • Before each winter season, have your furnace system and vent checked by a qualified technician to ensure they function correctly.

Why Is A Rapid Response Vital When Handling Storm Damage Restoration?

8/14/2023 (Permalink)

With intense storms and severe weather comes water, and a lot of it. Flooding and water damage from damaged roofing, windows, and siding will often occur. You may experience flooding in your basement or garage due to improper drainage or flooding waterways near your property.

Whatever your situation, you must receive prompt, professional attention when your North Nashville property experiences storm damage! Learn more about the water damage timeline here.

What Are Some Of The Dangers Of Neglecting Rapid Storm Damage Restoration?

Here are a few of the dangers you might encounter if you don’t take the necessary steps to manage the storm damage on your property:

  • As mentioned above, water damage may be a part of your experience. Allowing your location to remain damp gives mold a place to land, bringing a host of serious issues! Call SERVPRO of North Nashville for professional mold remediation
  • Your building may be compromised, possibly leaving you in a dangerous position. You’ll need a restoration professional to assess your premises to see if any damages must be restored immediately. Our storm damage technicians are here to help.
  • Some water from flooding or burst pipes can be contaminated. A professional water damage restoration company like SERVPRO of North Nashville can be onsite at your location immediately to assess water quality.

What Are Some Top Summer Storm Safety Tips?

7/3/2023 (Permalink)

The SERVPRO of North Nashville team would like to focus today on some vulnerable areas of your home and share some tips that can help you protect yourself and your property from the damages that can happen during those Middle Tennessee summer storms.

We care about you and your safety, so always remember that we are here in case of any emergency, no matter the size.

How Can I Stay Safe During A Summer Storm?

According to the CDC, the best way to stay safe during a tornado is to be prepared with the following items:

  • Fresh batteries and a battery-operated TV, radio, or internet-enabled device to listen to the latest emergency weather information
  • A tornado emergency plan including access to a safe shelter for yourself, your family, people with special needs, and your pets
  • An emergency kit (including water, non-perishable food, and medication)
  • A list of important information, including telephone numbers

Be sure your children know what a tornado is, what tornado watches and warnings are, what county or parish they live in (typically issued by county or parish), and what makes a location a safe shelter, whether at home or school.

How Can I Keep My North Nashville Property From Being Severely Damaged During A Storm?

  • Inspect your roof regularly to help you identify issues like minor leaks or missing shingles. If you find issues, ensure you get them repaired as soon as possible before summer storms hit the area. If your home suffers storm damage, remember that SERVPRO of North Nashville is here to help you repair and clean up.
  • Heavy rain and high winds are expected during summer storms, and dead tree branches, unhealthy vegetation, and unstable trees can often cause serious damage when uprooted or broken off. Be sure to properly cut back your plants and trees and dead or dying limbs and plants wherever necessary.
  • Investing in high-quality storm windows to prevent leaks and other storm damage is a smart idea to help protect your home from summer storms. In addition to adding another layer of protection to your home, they are also energy-efficient so that you will enjoy savings in your energy costs over the coming years.
  • Your driveway and entrance must be in good repair before inclement weather. Replace buckling concrete and other hazards before large amounts of water produce an even bigger issue to help avoid accidents and injuries to anyone entering or leaving your home.
  • Basements are a place in your home where leaks will show up and often go unnoticed, so inspecting both before and after wet weather will help you spot a problem and allow you to fix it, readying your property before a summer storm.

If you need more information on preventing storm damage to your home, contact us here at SERVPRO of North Nashville. We also specialize in the cleanup from water and fire damage, no matter the size, and we’re also mold remediation specialists. Visit us online for a complete list of our services.

How Do I Protect My Belongings From Storm Damage?

5/29/2023 (Permalink)

Your home or business could be affected when a storm hits North Nashville. You may experience roofing or structural damage, loose siding, broken windows, and landscaping damage; exterior damages are common during storms.

You may also end up with interior damage. Excess water and high winds can mean moisture will enter your building, affecting your belongings.

However, you can take some actions to protect your property and belongings from storm damage. Keep reading to learn more!

What Is The Best Way To Protect My North Nashville Property And Belongings From Storms?

Staying on top of property maintenance is the most effective way to protect your property and belongings from storm damage in North Nashville. Water and wind will affect the most vulnerable areas of your building, so focus on those first.

  • Windows. Ensure your windows are sealed and fitted properly before wet weather and high winds. Flying debris can be an issue, too, so you should install storm shutters for extra protection.
  • Garage door. Many people store precious belongings in the garage, so inspecting your garage door to ensure it closes properly and is weather-stripped will go a long way towards keeping water out.
  • Basement. Basements are often used for storage, and since they are located below ground level, they are also often vulnerable to higher moisture levels. Humidity will increase during a storm, creating an environment that encourages mold growth. If you store keepsakes and important belongings in your basement, place them in airtight and waterproof containers to guard against a mold infestation.
  • Electronics. During a storm, your electronics can be affected by power surges and outages. Use surge protectors to help avoid problems from lightning strikes, for example.

How Can I Prepare For A Tornado In My North Nashville Neighborhood?

4/24/2023 (Permalink)

Nashville is in an area known for tornadoes, unfortunately. Don’t be caught unaware; prepare beforehand for possible tornadoes in your North Nashville neighborhood!

A tornado is a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud extending from a thunderstorm to the ground; it generally occurs near the edge of a storm. A tornado can be obscured from your view by rain or low-hanging clouds, developing so rapidly that a warning is almost impossible. Tornadic winds have been clocked as high as 300 miles per hour.

Tornadoes can cause fatalities and devastation in seconds. Keep reading to learn more about ways to stay safe and be prepared.

What Are Some Tornado Warning Signs?

Understanding tornadoes and their warning signs will help you prepare for tornado season. Your weather channel reporter may alert you that you are under a “tornado watch.” A tornado watch means that the present weather conditions favor violent weather.

Keep an eye out for these danger signs:

  • Dark and greenish sky
  • Large, dark, and low-lying clouds
  • Hail
  • A roaring sound that is often described as sounding like a passing train.

Suppose your weather professionals report a “tornado warning” in the area. In that case, this means that a tornado has been spotted on the ground or indicated by radar, and you will need to take cover immediately:

  • Go to the lowest, most interior area of your home or business immediately, putting as many walls between yourself and the outdoors as possible.
  • Please stay away from windows and do not open them.
  • Use your arms to protect your head, or cover yourself with a mattress, sleeping bag, or pillows.
  • Remember where weighty objects are on the floor above, and stay away from the area directly beneath in case they fall through.

Having a tornado safety plan at your North Nashville home or office is essential in letting your workforce and family know where to shelter quickly.

3/13/2023 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO, we know what will happen during a Spring storm, so we know what to prepare for! Our extensive experience with Nashville area storm damage has helped us compile the following tips:

  • Inspect your home, business, and grounds before heavy weather affects your area; a leaky roof or windows can be a source of significant problems during heavy rainfall and strong winds. All your exterior doors and windows should fit correctly and be properly weather-stripped, while your roofing should be evaluated and repaired ahead of time to ensure that your house will withstand inclement weather conditions.
  • Unstable large trees and bushes can be dangerous in high winds. Trim back trees and bushes that are not in good condition, so windows and vehicles are not in danger of being damaged by fallen branches and more.
  • A clogged drainage ditch or creek bed will back up and flood property during and after a storm; checking these and making sure they are debris-free will save you some storm-related issues.
  • Consider installing a landline so you can still reach family or emergency personnel if your cell phone towers are damaged or go down. Have an emergency radio and a supply of batteries on hand to receive emergency updates and alerts.

Here are some of the most common damages you may encounter during a storm in your area:

  • A flood can devastate your home, whether caused by a tropical storm, hurricane, snowstorm, or a stretch of rainy weather. Even a few inches of water can cause significant water damage. That leads to problems with flooring, your home's structure, and your belongings. When your area floods, it can leave you without clean drinking water or power and leave your area vulnerable to landslides.

6/13/2022 (Permalink)

Summertime in Middle Tennessee is known for its storms and occasional flooding, so let's talk about some ways you can protect your North Nashville home from damages due to these conditions.

When It Comes To Storms And Flooding, What Are The Most Important Protective Measures I Can Take?

A wise homeowner maintains their property year-round since they know that being prepared is the best way to keep a home safe during inclement weather. Here are a few of the most vital measures to avoid storm- and water-related damage.

  • An already damaged home is more susceptible to additional storm damage. Getting your roof and siding repaired or replaced ensures that your home has the structural integrity to withstand more inclement weather.
  • Clear out your gutters to prevent water from backing up after heavy rain.
  • Check for loose or untethered yard items, such as fences or tree branches.

What Steps Can I Take To Prevent Roof Damage From Spring Storms?

5/9/2022 (Permalink)

It’s risky to ignore damage to your roof after Spring storms since they can result in higher-than-necessary energy bills and issues that stem from leaking. Spring weather in Nashville can be unpredictable, so be prepared by protecting your home and property ahead of time. Let’s talk about steps you can take to prevent roof damage to your North Nashville location.

What Are The Most Important Steps To Take In Preventing Damage To My Roof?

  • Maintainance. The very best way to avoid damage to your roof and home is to keep up with maintenance regularly. Replace loose and missing shingles right away. Caulking around pipes and vents should be done at this time, as well.  Exposed metal will rust and deteriorate, so make sure those areas get painted or treated regularly. Conducting regular inspections of all parts of your property will mean you save time, money, and trouble. A damaged roof can quickly become a huge issue, allowing water to intrude into every part of your home or business and cause water damage.
  • Trees and shrubs. Vegetation that overhangs your building should be trimmed back periodically, especially if some seem weak or have become a nuisance. Falling branches can do damage to a roof during inclement weather. If a tree or large shrub seems unstable, it might be time to have it completely removed for future safety concerns.
  • Gutters. Remove leaves, dirt, and debris from your gutters to avoid water damage from backed-up rainfall. Rain spouts can pull away from the building if they are overloaded or clogged with water and debris, damaging the corners of the roof and exterior walls. Prevention is always a good idea and one that can save you time and trouble.

What Are Some Ways You Can Prevent Spring Storm Damage To Your Nashville Property?

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

With Spring storms on their way to Middle Tennessee, it’s time to talk about some ways you can prevent damages to your property.

What Is The Most Important Thing For Me To Do In Avoiding Storm Damage To My North Nashville Location?

Your property should always be properly maintained throughout the year, especially ahead of bad weather. Being prepared is the most vital thing you can do to help keep your North Nashville location safe from Spring storm damages.

  • Your roof should be in great shape and without any weaknesses. Make sure there aren’t any shingles missing or loose that could allow water to leak through your roof and into your business or home. It is also important to inspect your ceilings and walls for any discoloration; that is one of the telltale signs of water damage.
  • Clean your rain gutters regularly throughout the year to prevent them from getting clogged. Gutters are designed to keep water away from your building, so it’s important for you to ensure the gutters are working properly.
  • Check your location for trees that have the potential to fall and threaten your property. High winds can break off weakened branches and even bring down unhealthy trees, causing dangerous debris to fly. If you see any trees that pose a threat, consider seeking assistance in order to help you eliminate them.

What Are Some Best Next Steps When My North Nashville Property Suffers From Spring Storm Damage?

Here are some ways you can handle storm damage at your North Nashville home or business.

  • Identify any areas around your property that are not safe. Keep people away from standing water that is in areas that have live electricity, for example. Or if you observe some structural issues with your building, take the necessary steps to ensure no one can be injured.
  • Take pictures or video of the damage so you have a record for your insurance professionals.
  • Once it’s time to assess the damage and start your recovery, call SERVPRO of North Nashville at (615) 488 3752!

Here at SERVPRO of North Nashville, we understand that Spring storms can still affect your North Nashville home or business, even when you’re prepared. For your strategy to be effective it needs to be established before the next disaster.

What Are Some Mitigation Projects I Can Completed to Protect My North Nashville Home?

Flooding is one of the hazards that can occur here in the North Nashville area, so today we wanted to share a few mitigation projects that you may want to complete before bad weather hits and damages your property and belongings.

  • Keep your rain gutters and drains free of all debris to allow water to escape freely.
  • Stockpile emergency protective materials and equipment, such as shop vacs, materials to soak up standing water, sandbags, and items that can be used to block water.
  • Elevate your water heater, electric panel, and all heating and cooling systems if there is a chance they may be affected by rising water levels.
  • Make your building watertight by using waterproof membranes and backflow valves, otherwise known as “dry flood-proofing.”
  • Modify uninhabited areas of your home to let floodwaters enter and exit. This is known as “wet flood-proofing.”

What Are Some Other Helpful Tips To Help Me Protect What Is Important To Me?

  • Be aware of your own unique hazards and do what you can to protect yourself. Make a disaster plan with your family and loved ones, and make sure to assemble an emergency supply kit to have on hand. What Are Some Storm Damage Restoration Tips For Your North Nashville Commercial Office Space?

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

It’s essential to be prepared for winter storms, no matter what kind of property you own. Power losses, debris, and standing water from severe weather can create challenges. After the storm has passed, you may want to know some ways to manage any damage to your North Nashville commercial office space - and maybe even prevent it.

What Are Some Important Safety Measures I Can Take For My North Nashville Business?

Safety for your workforce is the most critical consideration, so it’s wise for you to take steps to ensure no one gets hurt both during and after a winter storm.

  • If you have experienced flooding and there is standing water at your Hermitage/Donelson office space, keep people clear of this area. Electricity in that part of the building should be shut off safely, but never walk through standing water when electricity is engaged. You can contact your local electric service company to come to your location and take care of that. It will be vital to get any standing water removed as soon as possible to avoid contamination and mold, too. Professional cleanup companies can be onsite right away to handle damage after storms.
  • You should have the overall structure of your building professionally assessed if you have experienced storm damage. These professionals will check power sources and look for exposed wiring, determine whether the building structure is compromised and other unsafe conditions.
  • If your property has sustained substantial damage, be sure to leave things as they are before your insurance company inspects your location. Your policy may state that repairs need to be done by professionals and may not cover anything you do yourself. If you’re not sure what you can or cannot do, employ a professional who can do an inspection and give you an estimate for any repairs.

How Can SERVPRO of North Nashville Help You Get Your Office Space Back To Normal After A Storm?

What Are Some Winter Storm Safety Tips For My North Nashville Property?

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Nashville advises area home and business owners to prepare their homes and property for the coming winter storm season. Extreme weather can lead to power outages and disruption of communications, and damage to personal and business property and belongings. Flooding and significant snow accumulations can create unsafe conditions for your family, workforce, or residents, so you must take the necessary precautions for winter storm safety

What Are Some Essential Tasks To Complete That Will Ensure Safe Conditions At My North Nashville Location?

  • Remove dead trees, tall bushes, and broken branches from around your home. These can cause injury and damage to the roof of your house or business location if they fall during a winter storm involving wind, ice, or heavy snow accumulation.
  • When the snow melts or during heavy rainfall, the water needs to flow down your rain gutters and away from your roofing easily. If there is dirt and debris left in your gutters from the previous season, the water will pool and begin to back up, possibly damaging interior wall spaces in your home. Such conditions can even lead to mold growth.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned to prevent chimney fires. You will want to use your fireplace during cold weather and winter storms, so make sure it is in proper condition ahead of time.
  • Your HVAC system needs to be inspected throughout the year, ensuring that ducts are clear and ready for use, and winter is no different. Change out all your filters in the system, as well.

How Can A Professional Restoration Company Help Me Keep My North Nashville Property Safe During Winter Storms?

A professional restoration company like SERVPRO of North Nashville can come to your home or business and assess all the areas mentioned above with an eye to how you will weather a winter storm. We may detect issues that you are not aware of. We can also be onsite right away if the worst should happen.

How Do I Stay Safe During Power Outages Caused By Storm Damage In North Nashville?

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

There can be a significant impact on your daily activities when the power goes out during a Nashville storm. Heavy storms can create hazardous conditions that compromise your safety, too.

WHAT ARE SOME SAFETY TIPS I CAN FOLLOW DURING A NORTH NASHVILLE POWER OUTAGE?

Food and Medication Safety.

  • Keeping the doors of your refrigerator and freezer closed will help your refrigerator remain at an acceptable temperature for approximately four hours.

CDC Food Safety Guidelines:

  • Never taste food to determine if it is safe to eat. When in doubt, throw it out.
  • Throw out perishable food in your refrigerator (meat, fish, cut fruits and vegetables, eggs, milk, and leftovers) after 4 hours without power or a cold source like dry ice. Throw out any food with an unusual odor, color, or texture.
  • Check temperatures of food kept in coolers or your refrigerator with an added cold source. Throw out food above 40°.

Contact your physician to get direction on storing medications that should be refrigerated.

Communications.

  • Keep all electronics fully charged while you have power during a storm.
  • Have extra batteries ready for flashlights and emergency radios.
  • Avoid using candles for lighting, which can cause house fires.
  • Unplug items during a power outage. Although GFCI outlets and surge protectors are designed to control the current that goes through an outlet, this does not mean that equipment and appliances are safe to remain plugged in during a power outage. A surge can happen at any time, and an untested surge protector may not be able to prevent damage.

How Can I Determine The Differences Between Storm Damage Vs Flooding And Water Damage To My North Nashville Property?

9/6/2021 (Permalink)

One easy way to tell the difference between water damage from flood damage is to answer this simple question: is your home the only one having any issues in your neighborhood? If your house is the only one affected, you are probably not looking at storm damage.

Flood damage is generally considered damage caused by rising or overflowing water entering your home due to a storm surge or rain-induced flooding after building up on once-dry land.

Water damage is when water damages your home before it comes into contact with dry land, including heavy rainstorms or hail storms that allow water to leak through broken windows or damaged roofing.

What Are Some Causes Of Water Damage To My North Nashville House?

Your home can incur water damage from:

  • A burst sewer line
  • An overflowing toilet
  • A malfunctioning water heater
  • A broken pipe under a sink
  • A malfunctioning household appliance
  • Dozens of other sources inside your home.

What Are Some Of The Causes Of Flood Damage To My North Nashville House?

A flood is defined as a temporary situation where two or more acres of dry land, or two or more property units, are covered in water from one of the sources listed below.

According to FEMA, flood damage is caused by:

  • overflow of inland or tidal waters
  • unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source
  • mudflow
  • Collapsing land along the shores of a lake or a similar body of water. the collapse is a result of erosion or undermining caused by waves or currents of water that have exceeded anticipated levels

How Are The Dangers Of Flood Water Different From The Dangers Of Water From My North Nashville Residence?

  • Category 1: CLEAN WATER. It comes from supply lines, faucets, and other sources that aren't contaminated and can usually be cleaned with extraction, drying, and dehumidification.
  • Category 2. GREYWATER. This water will come from dishwasher leaks, sump pump failures, and other sources that can include contamination. It typically requires a degree of sanitation and decontamination.
  • Category 3. BLACKWATER. This comes from sewage, standing water, and other sources that can be seriously contaminated by pathogenic and toxic material. It requires an extreme degree of sterilization before people can safely re-enter the structure without safety gear. NOTE: Floodwater is always category 3.

How Can SERVPRO Help To Clean Up Water Damage?

  • We will remove mud and debris. Dirt and sediment will be carried in with water, whether from a natural flood or a burst sewer line. All mud must be removed from your home before we can begin the disinfecting process.
  • We will disinfect surfaces and contents. Many of your items, including toys, rugs, and furniture, may have to be disposed of completely.
  • We apply biocide, anti-bacterial, and anti-microbial to every surface. Contamination by black water and flood water damage can contribute to mold growth.
  • We will repaint and refinish surfaces. The powerful disinfectants necessary for this water and flood damage class may discolor walls, floors, and other interior features more than lower classifications of water damage.
  • We will repair any roof leaks or storm damage. Flood damage will often come with extreme weather, so the exterior of your home has likely experienced issues, too.

SERVPRO of North Nashville is here to help you when the worst happens. In addition to storm damage, we manage fire damage, mold remediation, and more. Visit our website for information about all our services.

How Can Technology Help Me Manage Storm Damage in North Nashville?

8/25/2021 (Permalink)

Storms in Middle Tennessee can be violent and cause a lot of damage to your North Nashville home or business. However, you can use technology to prepare for the worst, and today we would like to talk about ways you can do just that.

HOW CAN I STAY INFORMED DURING A STORM IN THE NASHVILLE AREA?

Getting weather updates is going to be vital for you during - or after - a storm. Here are some sources for trustworthy information:

  • The Weather Channel is a great place to find in-depth reports on area conditions, as well as what to expect in the coming hours. You can access this channel on your computer or laptop, or you can download their app to use on your phone.
  • Local news stations will also be sharing up-to=the-minute information, and they will have a website you can access.
  • You may want to consider buying an emergency radio so that you can stay informed if you lose wifi or electricity. Do some research to find the best one for your location.
  • FEMA sends out emergency television and radio broadcasts, so if you have some access to the airwaves, you will get those essential updates.

WHAT TECHNOLOGY EXISTS THAT CAN HELP ME PROTECT MY IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS?

When you experience storm damage, you can end up losing essential items through water damage. Heirlooms, clothing, and items made of paper may not survive the water and debris that accompanies the storm. Scanning and downloading your vital statistic documents will help you avoid losing things like :

  • birth and death records
  • marriage and divorce papers
  • birth certificates
  • insurance policies
  • wills and deeds

To ensure that such documentation stays undamaged even if your computer is affected, you can store extra copies on:

  •  a flash drive that you can keep away from water damage
  • a water-proof hard drive

SERVPRO of North Nashville can be on-site at your North Nashville home or business right away to help you recover from storm damage. We also handle water damage, mold remediation, and much more!

We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too.

What You Need To Know About Filing A Storm Damage Insurance Claim

7/19/2021 (Permalink)

Damage from a storm may very well mean that you are going to need to file a storm damage insurance claim, and you may be unfamiliar with the process. To help guide you through it we are sharing some tips today to help:

INVESTIGATE THE DAMAGE.

Once it’s safe to do so, take time to look around your property to see what has been damaged. Make detailed notes and take photos and/or videos of what you find for your records; this information can be helpful for your claims adjuster, as well. Take special notice of anything that seems dangerous or unsafe, and be sure to keep people away from those areas. If you feel it is not safe to stay in your home, save documentation for any steps you have to take, such as meals, hotels, rental cars, etc. If it is your business that is affected and you must go elsewhere to complete work, the same provision holds true. Reimbursement is made much easier with proper documentation.

CONTACT THE INSURANCE COMPANY.

Insurance company contracts require home and business owners to report the property damage claim to them promptly, so this is an important early step. You will want to check for time limits as to when you need to file your claim since your claim could be denied if you fail to meet this requirement. Additionally, exclusions, limits, and add-on provisions, like additional coverage for personal items, may be included in your policy, so be sure you know what these are. After you contact your insurance company, the claims process will begin.

DOCUMENTATION.

As we mentioned above, it is essential that you document the aftermath and provide your insurance adjuster with as many details as possible, such as by taking photos and videos of the damage. Be detailed in your description of the incident and list all items that have been affected. If your payout ends up being less than you expect or is fair, such documentation can be used when filing an appeal.

DO IT YOURSELF?

In most cases, you and your insurance company will work together to come to an agreement on all the necessary repairs and the cost of such repairs, and this will need to be in writing before you make any changes to your home. You may find it necessary to take reasonable do-it-yourself repair steps to protect your property from further damage. Avoid throwing out any damaged items until the insurance adjuster has made a visit to your home and be sure to save any receipts for items you purchase; you might be able to submit these to your insurance company for reimbursement.

SERVPRO of North Nashville is available to help you get back to normal as quickly as possible after any-size disaster. In addition to storm damage and helping you manage the insurance claim process, we handle fire damage, biohazards, chemical cleanup, and mold remediation. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too! This franchise is independently owned and operated.

Steps To Take After A Tornado

5/24/2021 (Permalink)

After you have experienced a tornado in your community, there will be various things to consider as you move towards recovery. Such extreme weather events can cause a large amount of damage, both with respect to physical destruction and loss to emotional trauma.

Here in Middle Tennessee, our springtime is lovely. It’s also the time of year when tornadoes occur more frequently. With this in mind, we wanted to share a few steps you can take after a tornado that will help you manage the damage and recover! Below are tips that will help save both time and money as you work towards recovery.

  • Find a contractor that is able to fund the beginning of the rebuild; insurance companies often take a few months to send the funds for the construction and repair work, so this step will help you begin more quickly.
  • Insurance claims will also cover your possessions, so take an inventory of all the items you have lost and cannot salvage through photo and video. You may even be able to list food loss in your claim; check with your insurance agent.
  • As you make purchases to replace the items that were lost, remember to keep all the receipts. Your insurance company will be asking for them in order to pay out your claim.
  • Advances can be requested through your adjustor for living expenses like clothes, food, and toiletries, so be sure to ask.
  • Your insurance policy will probably cover storage for items that were not damaged so that construction can go forward unhindered. If you have lost your roofing, for example, you will want to be able to guard undamaged items against rain and weather.

Next on the list are a few more helpful steps:

  • Cleaning or restoration service for clothes, house, and property will need to be scheduled.
  • Contact your utility companies about damage and important insurance.
  • Contact your mortgage holder or landlord to gather important directions you may need to know.
  • Rent a postal box for redirected mail if needed, and obtain a storage unit for undamaged items for protection during construction.

Our team here at SERVPRO of North Nashville is always ready to help if the worst happens. We are skilled restoration specialists who can manage disasters of all sizes. SERVPRO of North Nashville can help you recover from water damage, fire damage, mold infestations, biohazards, and more. This franchise is independently owned and operated.

Is Your Hotel Prepared For Storm Damage?

4/12/2021 (Permalink)

Your hotel business can be adversely affected by storm damages due to high winds, excessive rainfall, and tornadoes, and the repairs after this kind of weather can mean losses to any business owner.

Preparing your hotel for the stormy seasons and possible flooding ahead of time will mean a quicker recovery; preventive measures reduce the number of issues from storm damages your business will experience as well as the amount of time it will take to bring your operations back to normal.

Here are some ways in which you can prepare your hotel for storm damage:

REGULAR INSPECTIONS AND MAINTENANCE

One factor that can go a long way towards preventing damages to your hotel from storms is going to be regular inspections and maintenance. Identifying trouble spots and planning ahead for the possibilities of a severe weather event will often lessen the severity of the damage. Some examples of areas to focus on:

  • Landscaping. If your hotel is surrounded by mature trees, keep them properly trimmed and healthy.
  • Gutters. If your building has rain gutters, make sure they never become clogged with debris to avoid water damage and be sure to keep your parking and entries/exits free of obstructions so that people can get in or out quickly and remain safe.
  • Roofing. The roofing of your hotel needs to be in the best shape possible to keep heavy rainfall from causing leaks and high winds from loosening shingles, vents, and other equipment.

Employ a professional restoration company to inspect your property regularly. Replacing roofing, siding, or windows after a storm will be costly - both from a materials and labor standpoint and from lost business, so it’s just smart business to be prepared. SERVPRO is always here to help with storm preparedness as well as assisting with damage after the fact.

PROPER DRAINAGE

Storm drains are in place to move excess water away from buildings and parking areas, and these areas need to be in good shape ahead of heavy rainfall. Your local government will sometimes be the responsible party in public thoroughfares, but keeping an eye on them around your property will allow you to be able to report a problem right away and to be ready for storms. Walkways, patios, and other guest areas also need to be set up for proper drainage.

RESPONSIBLE PLANNING

You are required by law to post emergency exit information for guests around your property and to keep that information up-to-date, of course. For the safety of your staff, you will want to make sure you have a system in place to communicate with them, as well,  so that they know what to do in case of an emergency. Listening to weather updates will keep everyone informed, and you’ll want to make sure you keep an emergency preparedness kit on-site in the event of accidents or if the power goes out and people are unable to leave your premises.

Responding quickly to storm damages will get your hotel back in business right away, and our team here is here to help you 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. SERVPRO of North Nashville specializes in water damage, fire damage, storm damage, mold remediation, and clean-up projects of all sizes. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, as well. This franchise is independently owned and operated.

Checking Storm Damage To Your Roof

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

Winter storms often cause roof damage from ice, snow, and heavy rains. Now that Spring is just around the corner and it’s getting warmer, you may want to make an inspection of your home or business to see if you incurred any damage during the winter months. The roofing of any building is most likely to have been affected, so make sure it’s on your list.

Inspect For Leaks

Inspect your attic interior for leaks or water damage - this is a great way to know if there is an issue above on the roof. Water stains appearing on your ceiling or walls will tell you that you likely need repairs or a roof replacement.

Look For Signs Of Storm Damage

Look for signs of storm damage from the ground. Check for missing shingles or missing pieces of metal fascia, including any metal pieces displaced from around your chimney. You will want to carefully assess the condition of exhaust pipes, valleys, outer edges or angles where the roof meets the walls, as well. Any gaps or missing pieces can allow water to drip down or soak into places that will create more problems. Loose shingles will be affected in high winds, so those will need to be re-attached or replaced as soon as you identify them.

Hire A General Contractor

Fallen trees or large branches will be immediately apparent, of course. If that has occurred, stay out of your home until a professional can determine whether any structural damage occurred. You may need to hire a general contractor or roofer with a general contractor’s license if your home suffered structural damage; this may actually be something that is required by your insurance company. If the damage is really extensive, it may be necessary to obtain a permit, and a professional will know.

If you need a professional consultation or repair work for your roof following stormy weather, don’t hesitate to contact us here at SERVPRO of North Nashville. We work with all major insurance companies and provide a full range of roofing services, and we have all the skills and equipment necessary to restore your roof to its full operational condition. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, as well. This franchise is independently owned and operated.

Steps To Take After Storm Damage To Your Home

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

It’s the time of year we will be experiencing stormy weather here in Middle Tennessee, and any smart homeowner knows it’s best to be prepared. This isn’t just what you do before the storm comes, however - it is also having everything in place for the necessary repairs and cleanup projects just in case. Issues such as power losses, debris, and standing water can create challenges even after the storm has moved on and the safety of your home and loved ones can be affected.

Below you will find some steps to take after storm damage to your home:

Safety Measures

There may be a lot of debris, such as fallen branches or fences that have come down, that you will need to manage. Make sure to never operate machinery used in these areas while you are on your own, and wear protective eye- and head-gear while you are operating such machinery (such as chainsaws and chippers, for example). Take note of anyone who may be in the vicinity and be aware of your surroundings while you are operating such machinery and tools. If you have even the slightest uncertainty about clearing storm damage, wait for professional assistance.

If you have experienced flooding and if there is standing water in your home, keep people clear of this area. If it can be done safely, electricity in that part of the home should be shut off, but be sure to NEVER walk through standing water when electricity is engaged. It will be vital to get standing water removed as soon as possible to avoid contamination and mold. Professional cleanup companies can be onsite right away to handle damage after storms.

If you have tree damage to your home or property, always make sure there are no power lines down nearby before you start any cleanup. If there are, wait until utility crews can remove them before beginning your cleanup.

Structure Assessment

The overall structure of your home should be professionally assessed if you have experienced storm damage. These professionals will check power sources, whether the home is leaning if wiring is exposed, and other unsafe conditions.

Insurance

If your property has sustained substantial damage, don’t clean up anything before your insurance company does an inspection. The damages may not be covered, otherwise; if you’re not sure, employ a professional who can do an inspection and give you an estimate for any repairs.

Cleaning up after a major weather event can be challenging. Here at SERVPRO of North Nashville we can take care of these kinds of projects for both your home or business right away and get you back to normal. We handle storm, fire, and water damage, and mold remediation/prevention as well. We can also get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too. We are available 24/7, so ask us how!

Preparing For Winter Storms

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

With winter right around the corner, it’s going to be a smart practice to ensure that both the exterior of your home or business and the surrounding landscaping are ready for the cold winds, snow, and ice that winter can bring us here in Middle Tennessee. Being prepared will mean lower energy costs, increased efficiency of your appliances and other components, and a high level of safety for loved ones, friends, and clientele.

Here are some things to think about as you are preparing for winter storms:

Windows and Doors. The windows and doors of your property are always a vulnerable spot during heavy weather of any kind, and winter is no exception. Some steps you can take are:

  • Check all weatherstripping and replace damaged items to avoid any loss of heat.
  • Replace doors and windows with storm-proof versions.
  • Repair or replace wooden window frames if signs of rot or decay are evident.
  • Caulk windows and doors inside and out to be sure there will be no drafts.

Landscaping. This is an important area to consider ahead of bad weather; ice and high winds can turn any weak or dead tree branch into a dangerous thing:

  • Overgrown branches should be trimmed back from any building and its electrical wires. This guards against loss of power or property damage caused by icy or wind-blown branches during a storm.
  • Clean and dry deck furniture and use a heavy covering if it is stored outdoors. You may want to store items like this indoors ahead of high winds or tornadic activity for safety.
  • All your clay planters and pots won’t last well during winter, so empty them and bring them indoors. Now is the time to dig up your bulbs, remove the loose soil, and label them for spring. They should be kept in a bag or a box with peat moss in a cool and dry location until planting season.
  • Make sure all outdoor pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads are drained to guard against burst pipes. Store them in a place where they won’t be destroyed by ice.
  • Look for decay, insect damage, or splintering in your deck to prevent further deterioration, and clean away leaves and dirt from between the boards so that mold has nowhere to establish itself.

Fireplaces and HVAC. Your heating systems will need to be in the best condition possible ahead of the entire winter storm season:

  • Inspect your fireplace, chimney, and flue system to ensure they are clean of soot or creosote and look for any cracks that could cause a fire hazard, and be aware of drafts. If you find a cold draft even when the damper is closed, the damper itself may be warped, worn, or rusted. You will want to fix this issue before winter storms.
  • Clean or replace the air filter in your furnace for maximum efficiency and improved indoor air quality.
  • Check to make sure that all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order.
  • If you have an older thermostat, consider replacing it with a programmable unit; this can often bring pretty large savings in energy costs during cold weather.
  • Make sure fans are switched to the reverse or clockwise position, which will blow warm air down to the floor for enhanced energy efficiency and comfort. You will be warm and snug during any winter storm!

How To Protect Your Belongings If Your Home Floods

10/6/2020 (Permalink)

One of the best ways to ensure that your loved ones and your belongings are protected from disaster is to establish a strategy for mitigation. The word mitigation means  “the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters and other hazards.” And there is no time like the present to put a strategy in place that can save you time and money by lessening the impact of a disaster, and here at SERVPRO of North Nashville, we can help.

After fires, flooding is one of the most common hazards any homeowner may experience, so today we wanted to share a few steps you may want to include in your mitigation strategy. Putting these steps into practice, along with others you may come up with yourself, will help protect your belongings if your home floods:

  • Maintain your rain gutters and drains to keep them free of all debris and allow water to escape freely.
  • Stockpile emergency protective materials and equipment, such as shop vacs, sandbags, and items that can be used to soak up and/or block water and save your belongings.
  • Raise your water heater, electric panel, and all heating and cooling systems if there is a chance they may be affected by rising water levels.
  • Make your building watertight by using waterproof membranes and backflow valves.
  • Modify uninhabited areas of your home to let floodwaters enter and exit.

Be aware of the hazards you face and do what you can to protect yourself. Make a disaster plan with your family and loved ones, and assemble an emergency supply kit to have on hand. Talk about designated shelters with everyone in the household so that they know the best locations and sources for emergency information should the worst happen.

Here at SERVPRO of North Nashville, we care about all the things you care about: the safety and well being of your family and loved ones, and your property. If you sustain fire damage or water damage, remember that we maintain the equipment and skills necessary to get you back to normal after any kind of disaster, no matter the size. We handle mold and mildew, too! We can make sure your home is Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned.

How To Prepare Your Business For Storm Damage

8/18/2020 (Permalink)

Heavy weather and storms can happen any time of year, but here in Middle Tennessee the summers can be especially challenging. Storms and all the water they create can be devastating to a commercial building and can cause damage that can take a significant amount of time and expense to repair. There are several steps you can take to prepare your North Nashville business ahead of storm season, and taking such preventive measures will reduce the amount of damage your business may experience.

  • Well-maintained gutter systems will divert excess water to proper drainage areas. If your gutters are clogged with dead leaves and debris, rainwater can overflow and saturate the ground around the foundations causing damage there, while backed-up water can spill into wall structures, so a regular cleaning schedule for your gutters is going to be vital in preparing your business for storm damage. Keep in mind, too, that a mold colony can get established quickly and is impossible to eradicate completely, so removing issues that encourage damp conditions will stop this from happening.
  • Storm drains need to be maintained properly, as well. These are in place to alleviate excess water from accumulating around buildings and parking areas. Your local government is often responsible for this but keeping an eye on them around your property will allow you to be able to report a problem right away and to be ready for storm waters.
  • Have an emergency response plan in place for your employees. In the event of flooding or other storm damage, a system that allows you to communicate with your staff will help to keep people safe. No one should be driving through flood waters, so be sure everyone is aware whether it is safe to return to your premises. Listening to weather updates is a good idea, and you’ll want to make sure you keep an emergency preparedness kit on site as another way to prepare your business for storm damage.

Responding quickly to damage to your business will get you back to work right away. If you have experienced water damage from storms or fire damage, or if you have a mold issue, our SERVPRO of North Nashville team is ready to help. We are experts at large scale cleanup projects, and we can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned!

Protect Your Home From Summer Storms

6/29/2020 (Permalink)

A smart homeowner will take the steps necessary to be ready for any kind of inclement weather. Today, we here at SERVPRO of North Nashville would like to focus on some vulnerable areas of your home and share some tips that can help you protect your property from the damages that can happen during those Middle Tennessee summer storms:

Roofing Inspections. Inspect your roofing on a regular basis to help you identify issues like minor leaks or missing shingles. If you do find issues, make sure that you get them repaired as soon as possible, and definitely before summer storms hit the area. If your home does suffer storm damage, remember that SERVPRO of North Nashville is here to help you with your repair and cleanup.

Landscaping Upkeep. Heavy rain and high winds are expected during the storms of summer, and dead tree branches, unhealthy vegetation, and unstable trees can often cause serious damage when they are uprooted or broken off. Be sure to cut back your plants and trees properly, and dead or dying limbs and plants wherever necessary.

Storm Windows. Investing in high-quality storm windows to prevent leaks and other storm damage is a smart idea that will help you protect your home from summer storms. In addition to adding another layer of protection to your home, they are also energy-efficient, so you will enjoy savings in your energy costs over the coming years.

Driveway/Entranceway. Your driveway and your entrance need to be in good repair ahead of inclement weather. Replace buckling concrete and other hazards before large amounts of water produce an even bigger issue, to help avoid accidents and injuries to anyone entering or leaving your home.

Basement. Basements are a place in your home where leaks will show up and often go unnoticed, so doing an inspection both before and after wet weather will help you spot a problem and allow you to fix it, readying your property before a summer storm.

How Tree Removal Prevents Storm Damage

5/19/2020 (Permalink)

Do you live in an area where storm and bad weather conditions are frequent? Is your house situated next to trees and you are concerned about the safety of your home? You might want to consider removing any trees near your house that could be capable of damaging your home. Falling trees and limbs cause millions of dollars in destruction each year damaging homes, cars, and downing power lines. Take proactive measures by inspecting the surrounding trees regularly and remove them if necessary. Any trees that show hazardous signs of weakness need to be removed before storm season or they could topple.

Signs to look out for include:

  • Unsafe proximity to power lines or your home
  • Deep hollows or holes
  • A large number of dead branches, especially if the branches are large in diameter
  • Cracks in the trunk of the tree, especially vertical cracks
  • Decay affecting more than half of the tree
  • Prevalent trunk rot, mushrooms, or other fungi
  • Leaning trunks, especially if the leaning trunk has exposed roots on one side

Not all trees grow the same, some are more prone to storm damage than others. For example, a tree with shallow roots growing in soft soil could easily fall over onto your property with the aid of strong winds. It is also possible for trees to grow roots strong enough to damage the foundation of a house, create cracks in the sidewalks, or plug up septic systems. The most common types of storm damage include:

  • Branch failure, where branches break away from the tree trunk, falling to the ground or getting trapped in foliage.
  • Blow-over, where the tree heavily leans to one side and/or topples over completely.
  • Root failure, where the roots are not able to anchor into the soil correctly, this can contribute to a blow-over.
  • Crown twist, where there is pressure on an asymmetrical treetop that causes branches to split or warp.

You might also want to consider pruning these trees, which can prevent many problems. Quick removal of damaged, diseased, or dead plant parts helps limit the spread of harmful disease and insects, and can reduce the chance of future storm damage. However, over-pruning can weaken a tree significantly.

There are some instances where removal of a tree is absolutely necessary, especially when the tree lacks any structural integrity or there is a decline in health. Remove any trees around your property when it has major decay or significant damage from a past storm, failure to remove the tree can prove a dangerous threat to your family and home. If you failed to remove a tree before it fell over and damaged your property, do not worry! You can call SERVPRO of North Nashville for any storm damage needs. We’re faster to any disaster, highly trained storm damage specialists, and we have the resources to handle storms and disasters. We are always happy to help!

How to Manage Storm Damage Before Professional Help Arrives

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

If your home was recently hit by a severe storm, it is of the utmost importance that you keep you and your family safe until proper help arrives. You could be dealing with wind, water, or storm damage caused by a multitude of different factors. Here are some tips you can follow if you are not in immediate danger and if the damage that was caused is manageable.

Practicing Precaution:

  • Do not enter your home or the building until a professional has cleared it if you believe that it has been structurally damaged or if there is flood risk remains. For the time being, find somewhere else to take shelter and do not go outside until it is safe enough to do so. Do not drive unless it is absolutely necessary. Pay attention to the radio for advisories.
  • Do not go anywhere near downed power lines or any standing water or metal objects near these downed wires. Stay away from damaged trees, and do not swim in floodwaters.
  • Avoid using open flames, especially indoors. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
  • Once the worst has passed, assess any and all damage that your home or building has received. Inspect every part of your home for possible destruction, from missing shingles to bent exhaust pipes.

Cleaning Up Your Home:

  • Do not climb onto your roof unless the building has been deemed structurally sound, and still practice precaution when climbing and working at tall heights.
  • If using a chainsaw to cut trees or branches, be careful where you are cutting them down to ensure they do not cause any more damage when they fall.
  • Remove any wet material, such as rugs or carpets, and properly dry them out to prevent mold from growing and doing more harm to your house. Dry your home by opening any and all windows and doors, it is also beneficial to have fans running.
  • If it is more serious flooding, you are at risk for mold within the first 24 hours of a flood, so it is vital to remove the water as soon as possible and start remediation. Flooding poses a risk to drywall, support beams, and foundations. Flood water also contains dangerous contaminants and sewage and must be avoided.
  • Keep track of everything that was destroyed or damaged in the storm by documenting it through photos or videos along with putting together a list of broken items. You will need this list for insurance purposes.

Even if you want to take a proactive part in restoring your house after a storm, it is better to be safe and contact a restoration company like SERVPRO of North Nashville as soon as possible. The sooner you call us, the higher chance your house can be properly restored after a strong storm. Flood Damage Prevention Tips for Your Business

2/25/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage can cause very serious issues to your business, whether it’s weakening the foundation of your business and causing structural damage or becoming a place where mold can fester. Excess water easily creates mold and mildew in the right environment, which may cause health effects very quickly. Here are some tips you can take to ensure that you and your business are prepared in case flooding occurs.

  • Flood Prevention
    • Keep your gutters clean
      • Make sure there is good drainage surrounding your business. You do not want rainwater traveling anywhere near the base of your establishment. By keeping the gutters clean, it ensures that they will not overflow and cause the water to go where it should not be.
      • It is possible to clean gutters on your own, but if needed, call a professional.
    • If possible, the yard or area surrounding the building should be sloped downwards to avoid having water flow to the base of the building and collecting, where it can cause cracks in the foundation.
    • Have your downspouts directed 5-10 feet away from the business to make certain the water is far away enough from the building to not cause damage.
  • Fix all water leaks
    • Check for any leaks within or around your business, whether it be pipes or appliances. Even if you see drips or any dark spots under pipes, be sure to fix those as well. It is important to identify any leaks before they develop into a serious issue.
    • As previously mentioned, excess water can lead to dangerous problems like black mold or even termites, and leaks are just one this can happen.
    • Keep pipes insulated and have the internal temperature of the building regulated to prevent the pipes from freezing. Frozen pipes can crack and then lead to leakage.
  • Replace roof shingles that are missing
    • It is recommended that you inspect your roof at least once a year for leaks or missing shingles. Damaged shingles need to be replaced as well, and repair any cracked caulking.
    • Snow buildup can cause structural damage and weaken your roof, clean your roof when there is snow or ice buildup to prevent this.

If serious flooding occurs, be sure to evacuate everyone from the building as quickly and safely as possible to higher ground and call the necessary authorities. Anything minimal can be cleaned up by a restoration company, like us, here at SERVPRO of North Nashville. If your business suffers from water damage even after following these steps, do not hesitate to call us! We are professionals at water damage restoration and mold remediation!

Preparing Your Business for Winter Storms

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Winter weather is upon us. Are you taking the right precautions for your business to be prepared this winter season? Make sure winter storms don’t take you and your business by surprise by following these simple tips:

  • Stay alert for storms by monitoring your local weather channel. Know your weather terminology and listen for these three terms:
  • Winter Storm Watch: Severe winter conditions, such as heavy snow and/or ice, are possible in the next 12 to 36 hours. Prepare now.
  • Winter Storm Warning: Severe winter conditions are expected in the next 12-24 hours; 4-6 inches of snow or sleet, or 1/4 inch or more of ice is expected. Seek shelter.
  • Blizzard Warning: Snow and strong winds (gusts up to 35 mph or greater) can produce a blinding snow (near zero visibility), deep drifts, and a life-threatening wind chill that is expected to occur for three hours or longer.
  • Stay prepared by having a stockpile of emergency resources. These may include flashlights, first aid kits, battery-operated radios, water, blankets, food, extra toiletries, cell phone chargers, and food just in case the storms get severe.
  • Invest in a backup electric generator. It is also beneficial to have sandbags, road salt or ice melt, and shovels. Keep any walkways and driveways clear of snow, and salt the sidewalks to prevent mishaps.
  • In severe winter weather, establish space on your property for sheltering. There should be room for all persons currently on your property, such as employees, customers, and so forth.
  • Have a contingency plan. Be prepared for power outages, and determine essential equipment that would require the use of a generator.
  • Stay warm indoors and have a backup heating source. But guarantee that the room you are heating is well-ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Use battery-powered smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Once the storm has passed, assess any possible damage to your business. Make sure that there is no damage that could possibly hurt customers or employees.

Stay safe and warm this winter season. If the weather is unfavorable, it is ideal to stay indoors until the storm passes. After the snow melts, make sure your business stays mold and water free as mold grows easily when there are high levels of moisture. If you encounter any mold damage or water damage to your business after the weather clears, contact us, SERVPRO of North Nashville, so that we can take care of it for you.

Storm Damage in Nashville

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

It can be deceptive to how much damage water really does.

When you have suffered any flood damage in  Nashville, whether it was from backups in the basement sewer or from a large-scale disaster from a major storm, you’ll need certified technicians who know how to handle best flood damage, especially storm related. The last thing you want to have to do is search for a flood cleanup company that is reliable after you are dealing with a flood. Knowing who to call beforehand is important and will make things move much faster in the event of a problem.

It can be deceptive to how much damage water really does. It will penetrate structural cavities, making pockets of trapped saturation. Finding water in these areas can many times only be discovered with moisture meters. Moisture which goes undetected will keep causing damage, and this damage at a minimum will result in unpleasant odors. Even more, the damage will surface when materials shrink, delaminate and split, further deteriorating to where you will need very costly repairs. Plus, dangerous bacteria and mold can grow, causing very serious health problems for you and the members of your family.

What You Can Expect:
Once you call a professional water damage cleanup service like SERVPRO, we will first come and remove all the water in your residence with tools such as vacuums. The professional equipment that we use will allow the company to get all the water out of your home without creating a larger mess while doing so. Large air movers can also be used to finish getting rid of the water and dry out the rooms in your home. The primary goal is to dry your home out as fast as possible to prevent further secondary water damage

Once the water is visibly dried up, SERVPRO will go through with water meters so we can assess the damage. This will make spotting the source of any other water or moisture much easier, and once we’ve conducted any work which needs to be performed, we’ll take another reading to make sure your home is completely dry and back to its normal state. We also use thermal foggers, ozone machines, and air scrubbers as needed to ensure that all odors have eliminated and all debris as well. Sanitizing the affected areas after a groundwater flooding is critical to remove any pathogens or other harmful agents

Not all companies are the same, that is why if you do have any Nashville water damage, you will want to contact the professional services of SERVPRO of Northwest Davidson County right away. We can be reached anytime of the day or night and any day of the week by calling 615.876.9551.  We arrive at your residence promptly night or day since we are available 24/7 and are Faster To Any Size Disaster.
